Heartburn

Heartburn involves the acidic liquid content of the stomach backing up into the esophagus, causing pain and discomfort. While the occasional occurrence of heartburn isn't anything too serious, chronic heartburn can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Heartburn is caused when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn't function properly. This leads to the retention of stomach acids. To prevent heartburn, consider avoiding smoking and diets that are high in fats and oils.
