H1N1

H1N1, also known as "swine flu", is a swine-born viral disease that is contracted in ways similar to the influenza virus and has lead to deaths in the United States. In 2009, the H1N1 virus caused the massive flu outbreak that started in Mexico and spread to the US. As H1N1 is common among pigs worldwide, those who are regularly exposed to this animal are at an increased risk for contracting swine flu. When the virus mutates in such a way that it can be contracted by humans, it is referred to as "zoonotic" swine flu. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the disease and may potentially die if not treated properly.
