Three of the most common forms of depression include major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder. Major depression is where the symptoms of depression are pronounced enough to disrupt a person's life. Dysthemia is a long-term form of depression that involves symptoms that are less severe than major depression. Lastly, bipolar disorder is where a person will alternately experience periods of emotional upswings and excitability (mania) and downswings (depression). A bipolar individual may even experience a state involving both mania and depression, which is known as a mixed state. If a person experiences any of the symptoms associated with depression, a proper doctor's diagnosis should be sought, so the condition can be treated through therapy and medication.
