D.A.R.E. has educated America’s youth about prescription of drugs effects for 20 years. Since its on inception in 1983 in Los Angeles, Drug Abuse Resistance Education has effectively helped kids, from kindergarten to the 12th grade, learn about the dangers of abusing drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E is now in 75% of the United States’ schools districts, in addition to having a presence in 43 other countries across the globe.
Miami-Dade Dares to Cut D.A.R.E.
However, the police officer-led drug awareness program may no longer have a presence in Miami-Dade, due to upcoming budgets cuts being proposed to lighten the load of local $427 million deficits.
If the program should have its funding removed, it’s estimated that 120 schools in the county would lose the positive police presence that D.A.R.E. provides. Also, in addition to educating children about harmful prescription of drugs effects, the program creates a closer connection between youth and local law officers, showing police in a more personal, positive light.
The county won’t be laying off the officers involved; instead, they’ll be reassigned to other districts. For this reason, and the fact that many of the D.A.R.E. supplies (books et al.) come from fundraising, many are wondering how much money Miami-Dade will really be saving by axing the program.
County Citizens Rush to Save the Program
In reaction to the looming possibility that the very program that has largely helped the area to maintain a lowered teen drug use average may be disbanded, supporters across the county are organizing in an attempt to convince commissioners to look elsewhere for budget cuts. Parents are protesting, children and teachers are writing in letters, and a Facebook group called Save D.A.R.E. Save the Children has also been organized by D.A.R.E. supporters.
