free prescription card New Jersey seniors may not have to depend on their free prescription card if state Democrats’ alternative plan to Governor, Chris Christie’s proposal to double co-pays and make cuts to state assistance programs should pass.

As an update to one of  the more dubious prescription of drugs-related budget cuts we've reported, New Jersey State Governor, Chris Christie, had proposed to make cuts to the Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged & Disabled (PAAD) and Senior Gold programs in order to curb state spending and help heal deficits. Under Christie’s plan, thousands of PAAD seniors would be charged a $310 copay for buying brand name prescription drugs. Additionally, these cuts would also affect an estimated 23,000 seniors who are members of Senior Gold – their eligibility for assistance would be revoked.

The Proposed Money-Saving Alternative

Democrats are seeking to counteract Christie’s budget plan by making a proposal of their own that would instead stick the burden of balancing state deficits on those citizens who fall in the highest income tax brackets (those with a taxable income of $1 million or more – with there being allowances for small business owners), rather than the state elderly. Hundreds of thousands of seniors are said to benefit, not only from the continuation of state assistance to aid in paying for prescription drugs, but also from the proposal to have property tax rebate checks to reset to more accommodating sums, helping both seniors and the disabled saved up to the $1,300.
