Abuse of Prescription Drugs
Due to contemporary advances in prescription drugs and medical treatments, the modern person lives a longer, healthier life. What once was a rare and celebrated occurrence, a 100th birthday is becoming a regular occurrence, due in large part to modern medicine. Indeed, the benefits of today’s prescription drugs are undeniable; however, while medications are intended to be used for health-preservation, when an individual misuses a drug (known as “drug abuse”), the results can be fatal.
A dangerous addiction, drug-dependency can potentially lead to overdose. This occurs when a person has consumed amounts that far exceed the prescribed dosage for a drug, which can lead to death. Combined drug intoxication (CDI), another form of drug abuse, is another fatal complication that can be brought on by improper drug use. CDI involves the simultaneous consumption of a variety of different medicines and the fatally toxic interactions that ensue.

Celebrity Drug Abuse
A recent string of drug-related Hollywood celebrity deaths has shed light on prescription drug abuse, raising public awareness on the subject. Although the media has often incorrectly reported that these film and movie stars have died due to a drug overdose, combined drug intoxication has been the culprit in nearly all of these recent cases. Talented young actor, Heath Ledger, died at the age of 28 in an unintentional case of substance abuse. At the time of his death, he was taking a mixture of prescription drugs: pain-killers, anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping agents, and antihistamines, which resulted in CDI.
Additionally, international pop superstar, Michael Jackson, died from cardiac arrest at the age of 50, which was induced by drug abuse. Upon his death, the renowned entertainer was taking a variety of prescription pain-killers, anti-depressants, and anxiety drugs. Adult film actress and unlikely reality show celebrity, Anna Nicole Smith, also died at the age of 39 from this kind of drug abuse, having a variety of anti-depression and anti-anxiety meds in her system when her body ceased to function.
Furthermore, a large amount of prescription drugs were found in the bedroom of young actress, Brittany Murphy, leading many to believe that substance abuse may have contributed to the starlet’s tragic death. It is reported that anti-seizure, depression, anxiety, hypertension, pain, and diabetic treatment drugs were found in Murphy’s room.
Prescription Drugs and Personal Responsibility
When taken properly, prescription drugs can maintain good health and save lives; however, to abuse either over-the-counter or prescription drugs is a dangerous act that can lead to premature death. These fatal occurrences are not limited to celebrities: Anyone who misuses prescription medications can suffer the full effects of drug abuse. It is imperative for those taking prescription medications to act responsibly, working closely with their doctor and follow proper prescription dosages in order to prevent serious bodily damage or death.
