Discount Prescriptions Discount prescriptions are medications that are sold at a reduced price. The reduced priceis determined by several factors. The pharmacy or retail store offering discount prescriptionsto their customers may be able to buy their stock in bulk or might have been able to develop a special relationship with a drug company so that they pay less than other stores. Perhaps the store is part of a large franchise chain or network. Pharmacies and/or retail or big box stores may decide to pass on savings to the consumer through a program for discount prescriptions. Discount prescriptions may also come in the form of generics: drugs that are produced in the same way and with the same active ingredients as brand name drugs without the label of the manufacturer.

Customers should ask their pharmacy which prescriptions can be filled under the discount prescription program and may also wish to inquire if there is a generic version available. As a safety measure, the consumer should check with a doctor or pharmacist to learn about available products and not simply take the word of a store clerk.

Many stores will advertise discount prescriptionsprograms. Running a simple Google or internet search will help to locate these programs in local stores. Additionally, it cannot hurt to ask at the store for special discounts and programs, as some might not be advertised. The customer may also choose to inquire about additional discount programs available for future reference.
