Aspirin Side Effects Information has been released about aspirin side effects as they are weighted against the benefits of a daily aspirin regime.  The benefits of an aspirin regime are often discussed but patients should be aware of the existence of aspirin side effects, although the benefits may be great.  Patients should always check with a doctor before taking any type of over-the-counter or prescription drug medicine.

Outweighing Aspirin Side Effects

The main reasons doctors prescribe a daily aspirin regime are because the patient may be a smoker or may suffer from one or more of the following ailments:

High blood pressure — the Mayo Clinic states that this is determined by “a systolic pressure of 140 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or higher or a diastolic pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher.”

Total cholesterol level of 240 mg per deciliter.

Low-density ("bad") cholesterol level.

Diabetes.

Lack of exercise.

Stress.

Family history of stroke or heart attack.

Regular alcohol consumption (one drink per day for women; two alcoholic drinks per day for men).

A doctor may also prescribe a daily aspirin regimen if a person has had a heart attack or stroke as the therapy may prevent a second occurrence.  Aspirin should not be taken if there are other health conditions involving bleeding issues. Just as one would check on changes in prescription drug list medication, patients may want to make a habit of checking updated lists of the aspirin side effects to ensure no major changes have taken place.
