Side Effects of Lithium It is not uncommon for patients to be subjected to the side effects of Lithium if the drug has been used for a long period of time. New patients may be subject to immediate side effects while others crop up over time. Lithium is a a mood stabilizer commonly prescribed to people with bi-polar disorder or those that suffer from depression or mania. The Primary Lithium Side Effects

Serious effects include  hives, rash, itching; tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, mouth, lips, and/or tongue); confusion; blurred vision; diarrhea; excessive weight gain; drowsiness; fainting; inability to control the bladder/bowels; giddiness; increased thirst; involuntary twitching; loss of coordination; loss of consciousness; muscle weakness; severe nausea; persistent headache; ringing in the ears; slow or irregular heartbeat; seizures; slurred speech; unsteadiness; swelling of the wrists or ankles; vomiting and vision changes.
