Side Effects of Caffeine Every day people drink many different kinds of caffeinated beverages without ever considering the side effects of caffeine.  Like all drugs, caffeine has various side effects, however, not all of them are negative as you might in a prescription drug. It is true that caffeine is a drug and will therefore incur some negative side effects.  However, the positive sides to caffeine should also be examined.  Caffeine occurs naturally in many plants from fruits to legumes.  It has many uses and can be as beneficial as it can be harmful.

Some positive side effects of Caffeine include:

1.     Alertness and stamina.  Caffeine has been proven to raise a person’s ability to stay alert and increase brain power.  It also hinders the production of adenosine, which contributes to muscle fatigue.

2.     Diabetes.  Caffeine is one of the drugs that stimulate the production of adrenaline and cortisol – two chemicals that will encourage the liver to burn off higher amounts of sugar.

3.     Parkinson’s disease.  Studies show that caffeine could assist in preventing Parkinson’s disease.

4.     Heart disease.  It has been reported that caffeine may have some impact on preventing heart disease.

Some negative Side Effects of Caffeine:

1.     Panic or anxiety attacks.

2.     Addiction.  Caffeine is a highly addictive substance.

3.     PMS.  Caffeine worsens PMS symptoms including headaches and cramps.

4.     Dehydration.  When overused, caffeine will cause a person’s body to become dehydrated.

Also note that some drugs contains caffeine as part of a medicines prescription.

Taking the above information into account, it is useful to remember that the side effects of caffeine can be positive as well as negative.
