Pharmacy Drug Open enrollment for Medicare Part D plans that provide pharmacy drug for seniors ends on December 31st.  This means while seniors should be busy with shopping and celebrating the holidays, they must also be concerned with the business of Medicare and trying to create prescription savings for the coming year.

Pharmacy Drug Open Enrollment

Seniors should have received notice of the open enrollment period from their plans, or Medicare, by October 31st.  The period actually began on November 15th.  While seniors may already be operating within a plan for the past year, it is crucial that they take the time to re-evaluate competing plans.  As medication needs change and new plans may be available, seniors may find significant cost savings available for the coming year.  According to Maribeth Stein, outreach specialist at AgeOptions of Cook County, IL, “Plans change, and so do individual health care needs. Look at your plan carefully to be sure it covers the pharmacy drug and drugs you need, and whether you can afford the premiums, deductibles and co-pays.”

Determining which plan is right for seniors can be confusing, but there are resources available that make the process of wading through the information much easier. First, Medicare.gov provides a “plan finder” tool on its website.  Seniors simply answer a few questions, input information on their prescription drugs and the plan finder will highlight the most cost effective plans available – based on the senior’s personal needs.  In addition to Medicare’s website, help can be found at www.mymedicarematters.org; and then, of course, help is available through the National Council on Aging.

Whichever resource is used to help answer questions on available plans for pharmacy drug through Medicare D, seniors seek help before the open enrollment period ends.
