Despite minor side effects of birth control being associated with the prescription drug, Ella, the FDA has finally approved HR Pharma’s emergency contraceptive for prescription only use. Emergency contraceptive Plan B, currently available prescription-free in the US to adult women aged 17 and older, is only effective at preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Ella can be taken up to five days after unprotected intercourse, and is taken as a one step pill.
In clinical studies examining 1700 women, Ella outperformed the currently available non-prescription emergency contraceptive Plan B. Women who took Ella had only a 1.8% chance of becoming pregnant, while Plan B users had a 2.6% chance. Ella contains ulipristal acetate, which prevents ovulation by as many as five days.
What are the Side Effects of Taking Ella?
The side effects of Ella are associated with the clinical trials include nausea, vomiting, menstrual abnormalities, abdominal pain and painful menstruation, and are similar to levonorgestrel emergency contraceptive Plan B. According to the FDA, there are no life-threatening side effects.
The approval of Ella has not come without controversy. Despite its prescription availability in Europe and 22 counties since 2007 under the name of Ella One, opponents of Ella contend that the drug’s composition includes progesterone receptor modulators, similar to abortion pill RU-486.
Furthermore, Ella does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorreah. Risk of ectopic pregnancy are serious birth control side effects in the unlikely case that Ella fails to prevent pregnancy.
