According to a recent RX drugs poll conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Centre, almost half of all Americans regularly take at least one prescription drug, and have concerns over the safety, economics and the doctor who prescribed the medication to them. The poll surveyed some 2,000 adults aged 18 and above.
What Did The RX Drugs Survey Highlight?
The survey found that patients are actively seeking ways to save money on prescription drugs, occasionally in ways that could be hazardous to their health. 30% of respondents stated that they saved money on prescription drugs using appropriate methods, such as prescription discount cards or other discounting methods, but 27% of respondents have resorted to taking their medication frugally, by only taking one pill every other day rather than daily.
The survey also highlighted that 14% of RX drugs users spend more than $100 per month on their medication, even though the average cost should amount to $68 per month. In addition, 20% of respondents said that they have asked their doctor to prescribe them with an RX drug after seeing it advertised - 59% were honored their request. 43% of RX drugs users believed that generic brands of drugs did not work as well as more well known brand-name drugs.
“Consumers are not finding out about the safety issues of drugs," said John Santa, director of the CRNRC, in an interview with WebMD.
Santa believes that the issue is lies the RX drug ads themselves, stating that drug advertisements typically give the impression that the patient is suffering from an illness that is more serious than it typically is.
