The zinc-containing intranasal rx drug, Zicam Cold Remedy -a nasal gel that, according to reports, can cause individuals to suffer a reduced sense of smell.
In 2006, 340 lawsuits were filed against Zicam’s pharmaceutical producer Matrixx by users of the treatment, claiming that the rx drug resulted in a diminished sense of smell. Judges found little scientific basis to support the lawsuit at the time.
Zicam maintained that there was no link between its products, and that the individuals were in fact simply suffering from side effects of colds or other sinus problems. However, Zicam promptly removed the zinc ingredient from its products shortly after the lawsuits were filed.
Recent July 2010 studies suggest a possible link between prescription drug ingredient, zinc gluconate, and a loss in a patient’s sense of smell. An ingredient that is present in the rx drug Zicam, intranasal zinc gluconate - is also used in several over-the-counter alternative medications, most of which are not assessed by the FDA and yet still remain on pharmacy shelves.
An analysis of patients treated at the University of California’s Nasal Dysfunction Clinic noted that 25 patients reported an intense burning between the eyes and a loss in their sense of smell 12 to 36 hours after using zinc gluconate pharmaceuticals.
However, the study is still inconclusive. Common colds are a frequent cause of a reduced sense of smell. When used to treat common colds, it is difficult to ascertain whether zinc gluconate is responsible, or if the cold itself is the root cause.
