Before taking Niaspan, it is important to recognize common Niaspan side effects. Recognizing these side effects can help the consumer to avoid illness, the onset of various allergic reactions and other issues that may be related to this prescription drug.
Niaspan is a drug that is normally prescribed to lower one’s cholesterol. Keeping cholesterol low may prove to be a significant factor in battling a heart attack, hardening of the arteries and other heart related issues. Side effects are generally mild but it is still important to be aware that mild to severe side effects do exist. Side effects are not uncommon in users of prescription drugs but their commonality should not suggest that the reactions and/or side effects are unlikely to be serious.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, increased uric acid, headache, increased liver enzymes, dizziness, indigestion/upset stomach, heartburn, increased cough, increased blood sugar levels, nausea and temporary skin irritation.
There are also some side effects that are considered severe, including allergic reactions such as skin rash, hives and itching. Other side effects may be an unusual sore throat, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, chest tightness, shortness of breath, fainting, sudden changes in vision; increased sweating, stomach pain, muscle pain and/or weakness, fainting, tarry black stools, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, numbness, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe dizziness, persistent headache and a fast or irregular heartbeat.
Consumers should also be aware that Niaspan side effects may appear if the consumer has pre-existing medicinal allergies, gout, stomach ulcers, kidney or liver problems, or serious bleeding problems.
