Prescription drug guide announcement: Isomil and Go & Grow are two of the Similac-brand infant formulas being recalled by the manufacturer Abbott. The recall involves approximately five million containers, and is occurring due to potential spoilage with larvae and insect pieces. Unfortunately, the recall is only affecting powdered infant formula, as Abbott has stated that liquid-based formulas have not been affected. The need for the recall was discovered following an internal quality control audit.
The recall is voluntary and affects products sold in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico and several Caribbean countries. Families acquired the majority of the products through the Women’s Infants, and Children (WIC) federal program. WIC is a health and nutrition program available throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and a handful of Caribbean nations.
The FDA’s Prescription Drug Guide Announcement on Similac
According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), babies who have consumed the recalled formulas will not suffer long-term health issues as a result of the formula’s contamination. In fact, the FDA states that there have been no reports of illness connected to this formula incident. The most likely side effect is an irritated GI (gastrointestinal) tract or, in other words, an upset stomach. If conditions relating to ingestion of the product last longer than a few days, parents should not hesitate to consult with the baby’s doctor for medical help.
Steps Consumers Can Take to Ensure Their Child's Food Is Safe
To avoid contamination at all costs, consumers should check the bottom of the formula containers to check against the lot numbers involved in the recall. If the can is on the recall list, consumers should stop using it immediately and return it to Abbott for a full refund. To determine if your can of formula is on the recall list, you can use the FDA’s searchable database, the manufacturer’s website, or call Abbott at (800) 986-8850 24/7. Visit the FDA’s website for the most up to date prescription drug guide announcements and warnings on drugs.
