Extra Help Lessens Cost of Prescription Drugs Generic or Brand

The spiraling cost of health care and prescription drugs has been with us for years.  As a part of this, our seniors not only use a larger share of prescription drug list medication, but they are also less likely to have coverage compared to younger patients. This is because Medicare A (the part of Medicare for which there is no premium) does not cover outpatient prescription drugs. To receive coverage for necessary medications, seniors must purchase a Medicare Prescription D plan.  But even then, once a senior reaches the donut hole, they may not be able to afford the necessary drugs.  To help seniors in this situation, Medicare has a subsidy program called Extra Help, which can reduce prescription drug costs by about $3,900 – this will certainly help plug the donut hole.

According to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, at least two million beneficiaries who could quality for Extra Help are not aware that the program exists.  Qualification for the program includes participation in Medicare, limited income and assets, and the beneficiary must live in one of the 50 states or DC.  If single, the beneficiary must have a combined income and assets not greater than $12,640. If married, the income must not exceed $25,260.  For seniors in need of help when it comes to covering the costs of their prescription drug generic or brand, they should consider visiting the Extra Help website.
