Symptoms experienced as a result of the side effects of birth control are dependent on the type of birth control chosen. Females should consult with their physician to determine which type of birth control is best suited to their personal situation.
Birth control techniques include strategies that are attempted without the prescription of drugs (abstinence, the rhythm method, spermicidal creams or sponges, diaphragm, cervical cap, and condoms) as well techniques that do require a prescription: the traditional birth control pill, mini pill, patches, a vaginal ring, implants, IUDs, and hormone shots. Note that diaphragms and cervical caps must be fitted by the physician to the patient.
Birth Control Side Effects Can Occur With or Without The Prescription of Drugs
For techniques that do not require prescription drug list medication, such as those listed above, there is the possibility of side effects which include vaginal irritation and kidney tract infections. For those techniques requiring a prescription, the possible side effects are dependent on the chosen birth control method.
When taking the traditional pill, common symptoms can include nausea, weight gain, sore or swollen breasts, spotting between periods, lighter periods and mood changes. More serious but less common side effects of the traditional pill include abdominal pain, chest pain, headaches, vision problems, and swelling/aching in the legs and thighs. Women over the age of 35 and with a history of blood clots, serious heart or liver disease or cancer of the breast or uterus should NOT take hormonal birth control. According to prescription drug facts, women using the patch, the vaginal ring, patches, or the traditional pill should refrain from smoking. Smoking while using any one of these methods can result in the most serious of birth control side effects - that of blood clots; if in doubt, always consult your physician.
