The Side Effects of Birth Control
Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is one of the most serious (albeit rare) side effects of birth control, since it is a thrombus in the arteries of the lungs. Clots can form both in the lungs themselves, or form in the legs, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can often migrate to the lungs.
If clots are detected, a physician may insert a vena cava filter through an incision with a catheter to prevent the clot from developing into PE, by trapping the migrating clot into the lower body. The device does not dissolve or remove blood clots, but merely stops them from travelling to the heart or lungs.
Side effects of birth control, such as an increased risk of blood clots, are listed on oral contraceptive pamphlets. Contraceptive Yaz/Yasmin seems especially linked to pulmonary embolism, leading several users to pursue lawsuits against the company.
