Drug RX News - New research suggests that engaging in light exercise might avoid patients contracting osteoarthritis. Pursuing these light activities may protect against degeneration of the knee cartilage and even chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis. However, according to researchers at the University of California in San Francisco, individuals must remember to keep the exercise light. That is because strenuous high-impact exercise, such as running, climbing and skiing, can often be as detrimental to your health as doing no exercise at all.
Drug RX for Osteoarthritis May be Avoided With Light Exercise
High-impact sports can cause cartilage degeneration to accelerate. Cartilage does not re-grow and once strenuous exercise has started the injury or process of degeneration, the osteoarthritis can be difficult to stop. Researchers therefore advise that individuals protect the knees and cartilage before they turn 40, ease up on exercises that require knee-bends, and refrain from climbing for more than 30 minutes a day.
Furthermore, according to researchers, the best prevention of osteoarthritis is to maintain a healthy weight and diet. Healthy diets should include allowances for calcium and vitamins D and C. Research has shown that supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin can be helpful in relieving pain and stiffness. In obese people suffering from the pain of the disease, losing weight dramatically improved overall pain thresholds.
However, once osteoarthritis begins, a physician should be consulted to determine if a drug rx is necessary to relieve pain and inflammation. There are topical gel treatments available as well as oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Each drug rx class has side effects that consumers should be aware of, and therefore should always consult with a physician to determine the best treatment route.
