Niaspan side effects may be experienced when this common medicines prescription for cholesterol is taken for the first time. Niaspan, used in conjunction with diet and exercise, has been known to help reduce bad cholesterol levels in patients that have been unsuccessful trying to manage cholesterol through diet and exercise without the benefit of medication.
Uses of Niaspan, Side Effects and Other Information
Niaspan is prescribed to people with abnormal or elevated cholesterol levels. The prescription drug raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. People that have high cholesterol in conjunction with coronary artery disease may benefit from taking Niaspan as the drug slows down plaque buildup in the arteries and, in some cases, some of the plaque can clear away. Niaspan is also used for patients that are at risk of a second heart attack.
Patients should be aware, however, that Niaspan should not be used by persons experiencing stomach ulcers, liver problems, serious bleeding problems or certain medicinal allergies. Blood tests are required before and during the course of treatment to monitor liver problems.
Talk to your health care provider before taking Niaspan if you have a history of diabetes or gout, experience changes in blood sugar or drink significant amounts of alcohol.
The risk of side effects may increase when Niaspan is taken with lovastatin or simvastatin.
Possible side effects of Niaspan may include nausea, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, itching and increased cough. Serious Niaspan side effects include unexplained muscle pain and muscle weakness or tenderness.
