Prescriptions Drugs Prescriptions drugs disposal programs can now be instituted by states and private companies, according to the recent Responsible Drug Disposal Act signed on October 12, 2010 by President Barack Obama. The law now paves the way for programs to safely collect and properly dispose of prescription drugs, which were considered controlled substances according to previous legislation.

Prescriptions Drugs Disposal Programs Set to Expand

The Act comes after the highly successful national Prescription Drug Take Back Day on September 25th, which successfully collected more than 100 tons of medication set up in over 3,400 centers nationwide. Criminals often find prescription drugs that are carelessly disposed and sell them for cash.

The federal initiative was also instituted to help curb the alarming increase in prescription drug abuse by providing safe outlets for disposal. Unused or expired medication can also be properly discarded instead of sold or abused by former patients.

Prescription drug disposal programs also provide an environmentally safe method in which to dispose of potentially hazardous drugs. Medication is frequently flushed down toilets or sinks, potentially contaminating local water supplies.

The Responsible Drug Disposal Act will now authorize future implementation of long term facility infrastructure for residents to regularly discard of medication. In the meantime, many local pharmacies also accept expired and unused medication for safe disposal.
