Pharmaceutical Drug news - Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that claims the lives of over 9,000 people per year, with another 68,000 newly diagnosed annually. The disease remains quite unresponsive to medication, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Once diagnosed and treated early, the disease can respond well to chemotherapy or surgery, however, once melanoma spreads to more distant locations (known as metastatic melanoma), it becomes much more difficult to treat. Currently the only two drugs approved for the treatment of metastatic melanoma are Decarbazine and Interleukin-2. Neither pharmaceutical drug is effective at significantly prolonging life expectancy and the condition continues to be a challenging one to treat.
A New Pharmaceutical Drug in the Fight Against Melanoma
Provectus Pharmaceuticals has recently completed Phase Two of its oncology prescription medicine, PV-10. The company is expected to present its data from its Phase 2 PV-10 metastatic melanoma study, and will be presented at the 7th International Melanoma Research Congress in Sydney, Australia in November.
The Company has received orphan drug designation from the FDA for its melanoma indication. Phase 2 study of PV-10 was completed in May 2010 and is comparable to other emerging treatment options for metastatic melanoma, according to Craig Dees, Ph.D., and CEO of Provectus Pharmaceuticals.
Roche Pharmaceuticals, having completed its Phase I clinical trial for experimental Rx drug PLX4032 has posted that 81% of its patients had a partial response to the drug, with tumors shrinking by at least 40%. The effects of the pharmaceutical drug, while revolutionary, are only temporary but still remain promising.
