A new RX drug from Swiss drugmakers, Novartis has just been approved by the FDA. The drug, Teklamo, is used in the treatment of high blood pressure, and will be the successor to the firm’s current best-selling drug, Diovan.
The new RX drug is taken in tablet-form, and consists of a single-pill treatment that combines Tekturna and amlodipine, a widely used calcium channel blocker. According to Novartis, Teklamo contributes significantly in reducing high blood pressure, when compared to patients who are taking Tekturna or Amlodipine alone.
Teklamo - A Prescription Drug That Treats Hypertension
The new medication works by directly blocking the hormone rennin. The success of Teklamo is paramount to Novartis, as their best-selling drug Diovan, which is also used to treat high blood pressure, loses its patent protection in two years time.
An estimated 1 billion people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, globally the top cause of death. If high blood pressure is left untreated, it can cause heart attacks, strokes and even lead to kidney failure and issues with eyesight.
Research has shown that 85% of patients suffering from high blood pressure (or hypertension) will likely need to be prescribed more than one RX drug to achieve acceptable blood pressure target levels.
In June, the FDA approved Novartis’ new Leukemia medication Tasigna, a drug used to treat adults suffering from the blood cancer.
According to IMS Health, between the period of April 2009 and 2010, Novartis achieved a significant increase of 1.5% in its share of the global RX drug hypertension market.
