Facts About Prescription Drugs: A new report released by the FDA states that some weight loss plans may actually contain hidden prescription drug medication. Some weight loss plans, including pills and powders, may tout themselves as being the next best thing and make promises that they know they cannot keep. Unfortunately, the consumer often becomes attracted by the flashy ads and promises making it easy to succumb. Other programs refer to their wares as “supplements,” which may or may not be true.
“These products are not legal dietary supplements” said Michael Levy, Director of the FDA’s Division of New Drugs and Labeling Compliance. “They are actually very powerful drugs masquerading as ‘all-natural’ or ‘herbal’ supplements, and they carry significant risks to unsuspecting consumers."
Facts About Prescription Drugs in Weightloss Programs
The companies often get away with selling their programs on the market because they are not illegal, despite not being approved by the FDA. The FDA has noted, however, that many companies use the same active ingredients in their formulas as those used in particular prescription drugs, including those that have been taken off the market. For example, the FDA has uncovered products that contain sibutramine, an ingredient in the prescription drug Meridia. Meridia was taken off the open market in 2010 because it was shown to cause strokes and heart attacks.
Some weight loss companies depend on the fact that many consumers do not know the active ingredients in certain drugs and do not consult a prescription drugs list for more information about the specific product. Before taking any non-FDA approved supplements, always check with a doctor or pharmacist to ensure you are fully aware of any facts about prescription drugs that may be present.
