The birth control prescription list will add a new contraceptive as soon as October 2010. The FDA has approved Beyaz, a new oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer Health Pharmaceutical, the producer of the Yaz oral contraceptive. Beyaz uses the following active ingredients: drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol / levomefolate calcium tablets.
Aside from being an effective contraceptive, the “fourth generation” estrogen/progestin combination birth control pill also raises folate levels in women, the first pill of its kind to do so. Levomefolate calcium is a type of B vitamin recommended for women of childbearing age. While the drug is primarily a contraceptive, the medication is also designed to prevent folate deficiencies in fetuses where a mother has become pregnant shortly after discontinuing use of the pill. Folate deficiencies in pregnant women are serious and may cause neural tube birth defects.
Beyaz Prescription: List of Side Effects
Side effects of Beyaz are similar to many other oral contraceptives and include nausea, breast tenderness, interim bleeding and headaches. Risks are increasingly elevated in women over the age of 35 and smokers. Rare but serious blood clots may also arise from using Beyaz or other oral contraceptives. Interested patients should consult a physician about the benefits and risks associated with using this contraceptive.
Beyaz’s formulation is similar to Yaz, another oral contraceptive. Beyaz is recommended for treating folate deficiencies in child-bearing women, moderate acne and severe PMS in women over the age of 14. The drug will be added to the birth control prescription list shortly, and will be available next month by prescription only.
