Prescription Drug Facts The National Drugs Intelligence Center (NDIC) has released a recent list of prescription drug facts including side effects and uses of many common – and commonly abused – prescription drugs.

The NDIC, which is part of the U.S Justice Department, reported that approximately 36 million Americans, aged 12 and older, have abused discount prescriptions at least once.  The NDIC released a report titled the “National Household Survey on Drug Abuse.”  The survey showed that millions of young adults have abused prescription drugs.  Among those are 2.7 million youths aged 12 - 17 and 6.9 million adults aged 18 – 25.

Prescription Drug Facts – Abuse

Prescription drugabuse is prevalent among high school students.  According to the “Monitoring the Future Survey” created by the University of Michigan, over 10% of high school seniors have abused narcotics; nearly 17% have abused amphetamines (stimulants), 10% have abused barbiturates and 11% have abused tranquilizers (depressants).

In addition to the reports, the NDIC also listed information about prescription drugs regarding potential risks involved with improper use of prescription drugs.  The risks are varied depending what type of drug is misused.  Abuse of narcotics and opioids can cause life-threatening respiratory depression (labored or reduced breathing).  People misusing depressants, including tranquilizers, sedatives and barbiturates may suffer from respiratory depression, seizures and a decreased heart rate.  Overuse or misuse of stimulants can result in an abnormally high body temperature, fatal seizures, irregular heart rate and cardiovascular system failure.

It should be noted that not all misuse and abuse of prescription drugs is intentional.  Users should refer to a list of prescription drug facts for more information.
