Offering a prescription savings card to help local residents save on drug costs, The United Way of Greater Augusta, GA is partnering with FamilyWize Community Service. The FamilyWize cards will offer an average prescription drug discount of 30 percent when used. This is just the latest in a string of cities and communities across the nation to bring a free prescription discount card to their residents. Connecticut physicians are to become the next group to offer the prescription card to patients with no insurance; their card program is administered by Avia Partners, Inc. and will offer discounts of up to 50 percent. Hoboken, New Jersey has plans to bring the FMC discount card to their community and will offer discounts on prescriptions, labs and x-rays for those residents without coverage.
Prescription Discount Card Concept is Paying Off for Residents
More communities and partners are signing on board for the discount scheme as it offers a significant payback to involved partners. The state of California has announced savings of $70 million in prescription costs for residents since the State began its card program in 2007. Ulster County, NY began its card program in the summer 2010 and since its inception, Ulster residents have saved over $220,000 in prescription drug costs. Prince Frederick, Maryland residents have saved over $62,000 over the course of its 18-month program. Hernando County, Florida residents have saved over $2 million dollars since beginning their NACO Caremark Card five years ago; Hernando County is, though, switching to the Coast2Coast card so that the county government will begin to earn $1.25 royalty on each prescription filled. With so many successes across the nation, there is no doubt the time has come for the prescription savings card.
