Rx drugsThe theft of Rx drugs from pharmacies nationwide is fast becoming a widespread and dangerous crime fueled by drug abuse.  While nationwide statistics have yet to be released, reports of armed heists in pharmacies throughout each state reveal the scope of the problem.

The Associated Press reveals that in 2007, the state of Ohio reported 32 pharmacy break-ins, with the number more than doubling in 2008, rising to 68. The state of Missouri reported 518 drug thefts in 2007, rising to 606 2008.  2010 statistics in both states are expected to be higher. Pharmacies have also been reporting a spike in non-armed over the counter drug thefts as well.

Reasons for the Increase in Prescription Drugs Theft

Demand for prescription drugs is increasingly on the rise. Common prescription medication that is stolen generally encompasses powerful narcotics which are frequently abused and lucrative in street sales, such as oxycontin, hydrocodone and oxycodone.  Pharmacies represent the next drug dealer for many addicts, and some pharmacy Rx drugs can be sold for as much as $60 a pill on the black market.

In response to the growing problem, Walgreens has toughened up its surveillance to include digital photographing in pharmacy areas, and is locking away more common and expensive medications.  Some pharmacies report using lazer counting machines and automatic dispensers to triple-check the amount of narcotics before dispensing any prescription.

The Office of National Drug Policy reports that Rx drugs are the second most common illegally used drug, after marijuana.
