In medicines prescription news, Merck, a top prescription drug company, has announced that it will partner with the Rwandan government and Qiagen to launch a new program targeted toward vaccinating girls against cervical cancer. The program will also provide screenings for women. Merck’s part of the program includes a donation of two million doses of the Gardasil vaccine. Standard information about prescription drugs shows that the vaccine is designed to be administered to girls from 12 to 15 years old. Qiagen will also offer 250,000 free human papillomaviruses (HPV) screening tests to women from 35 to 45 years old.
Medicine Prescriptions for Rwanda
The Rwandan government has backed the program with a goal of preventing and possibly curing cervical cancer, which is currently the most common cancer among African women.
Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Richard Sezibera, stated: "It is our goal to create a comprehensive, coordinated program that includes HPV vaccination, cancer screening with HPV DNA testing, and treatment in order to address the nation’s unmet needs for cervical cancer-related health services. This vaccination and screening program brings us one step closer to reaching our goal of protecting the girls and women in our country."
Studies show that cervical cancer strikes approximately 500,000 women worldwide each year. Instances of cervical cancer are most prevalent in impoverished and developing countries where pap smears and other tests are infrequent and discount prescriptions may not be attainable. HPV is considered to be the second most frequent form of cancer among women after breast cancer.
