It is more important than ever for Medicare patients to understand the types of benefits they will or will not receive under a typical Medicare plan. As the laws change, it may become unclear what is covered under the new plans. Some people may choose to use additional insurance such as a Medicare prescription drug discount card or other means by which to help pay for the rising cost of medications. Purchasing additional insurance can be a tricky proposition particularly if the consumer is shopping for someone else, such as an elderly parent. Before shopping for a supplemental plan from an independent insurer, be sure to look into obtaining a free Medicare prescription drug discount card, i.e. one that is Medicare approved.
As Medicare benefits change and grow, keeping up with the additions and changes can be challenging and may feel overwhelming at times. The National Council on Aging's (NCOA) My Medicare Community initiative was formed to address potential problems faced by consumers and the insured.
"Benefits counselors do great work in helping older adults and people with disabilities understand maximize their Medicare coverageso they can live healthy and secure" said Sandra Nathan, NCOAs Senior Vice President of Economic Security. "My Medicare Community is a critical tool to make their job easier."
The initiative also offers resources with new and updated information on many topics, including the Part D and Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period that is scheduled to begin in October.
