Medicare Prescription CardMedicare prescription card drug plan holders are expected to receive important detailed literature this month about program changes for 2011. Medicare package programs will arrive before October 15, 2010 in the mailboxes of current enrollees, which will detail the new Part D Rx coverage plans. Between November 15 and December 31, enrollees can choose from a variety of privately offered plans. They can use the open enrollment period to remain, or change their plan accordingly if it does not meet their needs. Coverage begins on January 1, 2011.

What to Consider When Choosing a Medicare Card Program

Coverage, deductibles, prescription drug needs and quality of care are among a few things to consider when selecting coverage plans for the coming new year. While Medicare drug plans vary, an interesting change for 2011 is that patients who reach the greatly controversial, and widely detested coverage gap, also dubbed “the donut hole”, will only be required to pay half the price of their unsubsidized prescription medicines while the government supplements the other half. The coverage limit is currently set at $2,840 for 2011, and the gap is set to be completely eradicated in 2020.

Many Part D Medicare premiums for pharmaceutical drugs are expected to rise in 2011 -- a means to offset the added benefits for seniors. Sernior are encouraged to do their homework. It is important to clearly assess coverage needs before enrolling for a Medicare prescription card program and to use the open enrollment period to test out and switch plans if required.
