The number of teenagers taking list prescription drugs with alcohol is on the increase, according to a recent survey conducted among students in the Sumner County school system.
Around 700 students were questioned in grades 6-12, and many admitted to have taken prescription medication in the past as a method of getting high.
Growing Number of Teenagers Taking Un-Prescribed Prescription Drugs
The survey found that 6% of students in the 12th grade admitted to having took medication to experience a high, while 12% of students in the 10th grade had also taken prescription drugs to get high in the last 30 days. 2% of students in the sixth grade and 1% in the eighth grade had also done the same.
While many adults have simply put the statistics down to teenage ‘experimentation’, the results are a growing concern, due to the dangers involved with mixing alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs.
The news comes amidst recent reports that teenagers have been experimenting with prescription drugs and caffeine energy drinks, which can have fatal consequences if taken with medication that also contains caffeine.
Aside from the dangers and unwanted conditions that the admistering of un-prescribed medication can bring, there is also the risk of teenagers becoming addicted to certain drugs, for example painkillers, which have a traditionally high rate of addiction attached to them.
While parents should always keep their medicine out of reach of children, households with teenagers should also keep an eye on their list prescription drugs to avoid any unwanted incidents, which could prove to be fatal.
