Side Effects of Aspirin Recently, news has come to light focusing on the side effects of aspirin, particularly as it relates to other drugs and conditions.  Many over-the-counter products can produce side effects just like any prescription drugs.  Patients should be aware that aspirin side effects do exist and should be treated as a serious matter if it is thought they are taking place.  Aspirin is commonly used, mainly because of its usually low number of side effects and the fact that its benefits outweigh the consequences.  Remember, all over-the-counter remedies are drugs and, therefore, have the same risks as any prescription drug.

First of all, people that take the following drugs should check with a doctor before taking aspirin:

  • Some antidepressants.
  • Ibuprofen (ongoing usage).
  • Warfarin (Coumadin).
  • Heparin.
  • Corticosteroids.

Some Possible Aspirin Side Effects

The possible risks from taking aspirin include:

  • Tinnitus and/or hearing loss.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding.
  •  Stomach ulcers may be caused by the use of aspirin.  Aspirin may also aggravate existing bleeding ulcers to a life-threatening degree.
  • Hemorrhagic stroke. A daily aspirin regimen may play a significant role in preventing certain types of stroke; however, it may also increase the risk of causing a hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke.
  • Aspirin can cause excessive bleeding before a surgical procedure (including dental).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning that people who take aspirin regularly or are on a daily aspirin regimen should abstain from or limit alcohol consumption.

Patients should always check an updated list of the aspirin side effects when taken alongside other generic or discount prescriptions.
