U.S. health authorities have released information about prescription drugspreviously believed to cause certain forms of cancer. According to the newly released report, prescription drugsused to treat high blood pressure do not increase the risk of certain types of cancer. The article refers to angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs). It includes medications such as losartan (Cozaar), telmisartan (Micardis), candesartan (Atacand) and valsartan (Diovan). The data quoted in the article comes from the FDA, which recently finished conducting a safety review on the drugs.
Prescription drugs were prevously thought to cause some cancers
“It is comforting to have this data to support what we clinically felt was true” said Dr. Joseph Diamond, who serves as the Director of Nuclear Cardiology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center located in New York.
The FDA launched the safety review after investigating the release of a meta-analysis that appeared in the July 2010 issue of The Lancet. It was reported that there was “modestly increased risk” – perhaps as much as 10% – of cancer diagnoses amongst people taking ARBs. It was also reported that there was a minor increased risk of death caused by cancer.
Officials say that there had been little concern and no negative information about prescription drugsup to the point when the report was released.
“It's a drug that's been out for a very long time so we have a lot of clinical experience with it” Diamond said.
The FDA review analyzed 31 trials and obtained extensive information about prescription drugsbefore concluding their study.
