One of the most commonly abused drugs remains prescription drug medications, as previous reported. In fact, according to some shocking statistics released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration and the White House Office of Drug Control Policy, abuse rates have risen an astonishing 400% according in some ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
The unfortunate reality is that abusing prescription drugs has become easier than ever before. While advances in medication have made an undeniably positive impact on human society, this also means that more innovative and advanced drugs are legally available as controlled substances.
Curbing Prescription Drugs Abuse
Thankfully, American states have taken initiative in addressing the problem and cracking down on addicts who move from doctor to doctor to obtain their pharmaceutical fixes. Boston’s Public Health Council has announced this week that they are investing in a $1 million advanced prescription drugs database that will allow pharmacists and doctors to access prescriptions filled for controlled narcotics, particularly painkillers and oxycontin. Oxycontin is a commonly abused and addictive prescription drug.
The database would contain both the accurate prescription information as well as schedule information. The system will also cost an extra $400,000 per year to maintain but should discourage most of the 9,000 and more people who “doctor shop” in the state of Massachusetts every year. Other states, such as Virginia, Florida, Maine, Delaware and Minnesota are also signing bills and implementing state-wide prescription monitoring programs to curb prescription drug abuse rates.
