Ibuprofen Side Effects - Advil, Motrin and Nuprin all contain the active generic ingredient ibuprofen, which can be found in most household medicine cabinets, and remains a common over-the-counter pain reliever that is both effective and trustworthy. Ibuprofen is classified as an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and is administered for a variety of reasons, specifically minor pain. Ibuprofen is highly effective in treating pain related to headaches, muscle aches, muscle strains, menstrual cramps, dental aches, flu, cold fever, backaches and more.
Potential Side Effects of Ibuprofen
The medication is generally safe to take in the majority of cases, with few serious side effects. But as with all medications, there are some side effects that must be mentioned. The most common effects include heartburn and stomach upset, which can be reduced by taking the medication with food or milk. Other side effects of ibuprofen include rashes, drowsiness, dizziness, ear ringing, abdominal pain, stomach upset and diarrhea.
NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin, reduce the blood’s clotting ability and can increase bleeding after injury. NSAIDs can also reduce blood flow to the kidneys, impairing function, meaning that patients with past kidney problems should take ibuprofen with extreme caution. Ibuprofen may also cause ulceration of the intestines and stomach, or other forms of stomach bleeding. More severe (and rare) side effects such as hypertension, fluid retention and heart failure have been reported with the use of NSAIDs.
Ibuprofen is also known to interfere with certain medications, especially blood-pressure lowering prescription medications, anticoagulants and amino glycoside. Despite its widespread use, it is currently not recommended to take the pharmaceutical medicine during pregnancy, due to potential Ibuprofen side effects.
