Ibuprofen Side EffectIncreased risk of heart attack, a long suspected ibuprofen side effect, has been debunked according to a recent study conducted by The University of Aberdeen. The Australian study, led by Professor Arduino Mangoni, examined the pharmacy prescription medication database of 320,000 elderly patients. The patients examined suffered from multiple co-existing conditions. The study revealed that the use of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), including ibuprofen, was completely neutral when it came to developing heart disease.

The study, published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, contradicts previous research which linked ibuprofen side effects to elevated heart disease. In fact, this time a positive ibuprofen side effect was uncovered. Use of NSAID drugs was linked to a reduced risk of dying from any cause. Reasons for this are still unclear. Previous studies have also linked ibuprofen to reduced risks of developing Parkinson’s disease in the elderly.

What Are Common Ibuprofen Side Effects?

The use of ibuprofen, branded as Advil and Motrin, has been widespread since its FDA approval in 1974. Ibuprofen is commonly used to treat aches, pain, inflammation, cramps and arthritis. NSAIDs like ibuprofen do carry some precautions. Potentially serious, but relatively rare ibuprofen side effects include stomach bleeding, kidney problems, jaundice, increased blood pressure and fluid retention. Ibuprofen has also been thought to interfere with aspirin and asthma medication.

Although painkillers and anti-inflammatory prescription drugs are beneficial, they are only suitable for everyday use when prescribed by a physician. Be sure to speak to a physician about ibuprofen side effects and benefits before taking painkillers on a regular basis.
