A popular cat prescription medication may have been contaminated. Cat owners who currently feed their four-legged friends with Iams may want to check whether their cat's is among the questionable batch.
Last month, Iams’ ProActive Health Food was recalled after concerns that the cat food was lacking in essential vitamins. This month however, Iams is recalling a batch of its Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal dry cat food amidst fears that it has been contaminated with salmonella.
FDA analysts have identified that the was found to have a positive result for salmonella in some lots of the product. Initial reports suggest that the contaminated cat food may have been sold throughout the United States.
The Harmful Effects of Salmonella
Salmonella not only causes serious infections in cats - if owners handle the infected dry food, cross-contamination may occur and can spread to humans as well.
Side effects of Salmonella in cats range from bloody diarrhea and lethargy to vomiting. Some cats, however, will only show signs of reduced appetite and in some cases will not show any visible symptoms at all.
What to Do with a Contaminated Pet Prescription Medicine
If you are a pet discount card holder, and benefit from reduced savings in feline prescription medication, first check that you are not using Iams’ Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal dry cat food. If you are, check the lot code on the packaging and ensure you are not using one of the contaminated lots. The contaminated products will contain these codes: 01384174B4 or 01384174B2, which can be found in the lower right corner on the back of the bag.
If you are worried that your cat has consumed the contaminated Iams prescription medication, please contact Proctor & Gamble at 877-894-4458, who will advise you on the best course of action.
