HCTZ side effects can be quite serious if the patient’s physician is not made aware of occurring symptoms. HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide or HCT), is classified on the prescription drugs list as a diuretic and is available as a generic drug, as well as under several brand names such as Esidrix, HydroDIURIL, Microzide and Oretic. As a diuretic, HCTZ is used to control high blood pressure, or hypertension (by lowering blood pressure), and relieve fluid retention.
Potential Allergic Reactions
Information about prescription drugs states that this drug’s side effects can include – but are not limited to – weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, stomach cramps, increased blood sugar, electrolyte imbalance, sensitivity to the sun, muscle spasms, pancreatitis, hair loss, and impotence. Patients should discuss any of these symptoms with their physician as they may decide to change the dosing based on the symptoms presented. Individuals considering HCTZ should remember that there are a number of drugs that the medication should not be combined with. HCTZ is also likely to cause allergic reactions if the patient has a history of asthma or general allergies.
Drug interactions may cause the most serious of side effects to occur, especially if patients are currently taking insulin, oral diabetes medication, blood pressure medications, or when taken with alcohol, barbiturates, narcotics, Cholestyramine, Colestipol, corticosteroids or NSAIDs. More serious side effects can include liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, lupus, swelling under the skin, gout, pancreatitis, high cholesterol, allergies, asthma, fluid problems such as electrolyte imbalance and parathyroid problems. If the patient is pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, they should consult their physician as well as the medicines prescription to determine the correct dosing to avoid HCTZ side effects.
