Prescription Drugs Prescription Drugs News: Governors in Kentucky and Florida yesterday put pressure on congress to help fight the increasing number of prescription drug abuse cases, which the governors claim are having a detrimental effect on their communities.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Florida Gov. Rick Scott told lawmakers that the spread of illegal medication has increased exponentially in both states in the last few years, in spite of attempts to put a stop to it.

A panel consisting of law enforcement, families and governors gave their case to concentrating on tackling the issue of illegal prescription drug abuse. Currently, information about prescription drugs abuse remains an elusive issue, due to 70% of reports being that of people obtaining medication from relatives or friends. Such drugs are often incorrectly assumed to be safer than illegal drugs simply because they are distributed by pharmacies and manufactured by drug companies.

Causes of Prescription Drugs Abuse in Florida

According to recent prescription drug facts, the crux of the issue resides in Florida - nearly all of the top doctors in the whole of the US who prescribe oxycodone are based in the state.

Currently, lawmakers in Florida are discussing possible legislation that would call for a new database to monitor the dispensing of prescription medication. Gov. Beshear noted that such a system had already been in place for some 10 years, but that Florida lacked one and, as a result, has created somewhat of a pipeline to Kentucky. Currently, around 80 people die each month in Kentucky as a result of overdosing on prescription drugs.
