The safety of foreign rx drugs is a concern for many patients, a recently published study this week by the Pew Prescription Project health policy think tank shows. According to the poll, 73% of Americans responded that they were not confident about foreign drugs made in China and 54% expressed concerns about drugs produced in India.
Respondents revealed much more confidence in European and North American produced pharmaceuticals, with a resounding 96% confident in the safety of American rx drugs and 91% convinced that Canadian medications are safe. Only 12% of those polled expressed hesitation about Swiss-made drugs.
How Are We Protected Against Potentially Dangerous Foreign Prescription Drugs?
Concern about the quality of foreign made ingredients is also important to the FDA. Up to 80% of active ingredients in prescription medicines are made outside of the U.S., in countries with significantly varying standards. 2009 saw a dramatic increase in the number of drug recalls, a rise of 400% in comparison to the previous year. Imported rx drugs in fact, receive less than 5% of FDA approvals.
The FDA is considered the toughest system in the world and quality control measures for pharmaceutical drugs are rightfully strict. Proposed legislation by Democrat Senator Michael Bennet, coined the Drug Safety and Accountability Act of 2010, provides the FDA with additional rights to help protect American pharmaceutical companies.
If approved, the Act would establish quality standards for drug companies and their overseas contractors and oversee the production and manufacturing of OTC (over the counter) drugs. At present, most regulation surrounds the production of rx drugs only.
