medicines prescription HIV sufferers who regularly take HIV medicines prescription and experience excess fat as a drug side effect have a new treatment option for the disease. Egrifta, developed by Montreal-based Theratechnologies, has been shown to treat lipodystrophy, which causes excess visceral abdominal fat. This condition is common among HIV sufferers currently taking long-term drug therapy.

The hormone injected prescription treatment was approved on November 10, 2010 for use in the United States. Patients would be required to inject the medication once a day.

Trial treatments have shown that the drug was effective in clinical studies.  Patients who used the drug were shown to have significantly less fat, 15-17% less than those only taking placebos.

Despite the reductions in visceral fat, The FDA has cautioned that Egrifta has not been proven to decrease heart disease risks in patients. It is also uncertain if Egrifta improves compliance with antiretroviral drugs.

Side Effects of Egrifta Medicines Prescription

Reported Phase III side effects noted in clinical trials included joint pain, skin rashes and redness at the injection site, stomach pain and minor swelling.

Egrifta is expected to be available in the United States in January 2011, where it will be marketed EMD Sereno, a company based in Rockland, Massachusetts.

Patients requiring medicines prescription for HIV often face high drug costs and should consider registering for a prescription discount card to save money on long-term medication.
