Prescription medicine can be a dangerous hazard in the home, particularly if it remains on site long after it has outlived its usefulness. Common prescription drugs found in medicine cabinets include antibiotics and other drugs prescribed for short-term treatments. It is important to note that prescription drugs should be disposed of properly to ensure that they are not used past their expiration date or consumed by anyone other than the patient for which they were prescribed.
Prescription Medicine Take-Back Day
In a measure to prevent accidental ingestion or misuse of prescription drugs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is sponsoring its 2nd Annual Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The program was designed to help people dispose of prescription drug list medicine in a safe and discreet manner. This year the 2nd annual event will take place on April 30th. The DEA offers advice regarding the proper disposal of drugs, including over-the-counter items such as cold medicine and nasal sprays.
Many people simply dump old medications in the toilet or the sink, which does get rid of the medicine but may pose potential health hazards to water and sewage systems. For more information on the prescription medicine disposal program, go to www.dea.gov.
