There have been hundreds, if not thousands of articles written about people traveling from all over the United States to go to Canada to buy discount prescriptions. The amount being saved was so significant that many seniors were chartering buses to cross the borders with the hope of being able to afford medications that were too expensive in their own states. When people began to learn about the savings that could be had by going into Canada, the trend to purchase prescription drug products across the border grew at a rapid rate.
Discount Prescriptions
The problem came about when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that any and all shipments of discount prescriptions from Canada or other foreign markets were a violation of federal law. This included products being shipped over the borders as well as the items being purchased by U.S. citizens and driven across. There are many legal experts that have disagreed with the FDA on this issue, saying that it is not illegal to import prescription drugs in this manner as long as existing federal law is not violated.
When approached about the mounting issue, the FDA provided information and guidance to consumers and the public at large how to legally import prescription drugs. To date no individual has been prosecuted by the Food and Drug Administration or any other federal agency for importing non-controlled discount prescriptions for personal use, as long as the seller was a certified member and/or pharmacy affiliated with the Canadian International Pharmacy Association.
