Prescription Discount Card Some government agencies are stepping up to take care of underinsured and uninsured people on a smaller scale by offering discount prescription savings card schemes.  A Pennsylvania county agency has recently stepped up to offer its residents the opportunity to receive a free prescription card that may save the consumer up to 24% off retail prescription prices.

The county commissioners in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania have joined neighboring counties in the program to offer residents free prescription discount cards for use at participating local pharmacies.  The program is being offered through the National Association of Counties.

Acceptance of Prescription Discount Card Schemes

A county news release stated: "The NACo (National Association of Counties) card is available now to anyone who requests one: there are no enrollment fees, age requirements or income limits.  An estimated 90 percent of the pharmacies in the county will accept the NACo card, and more than 60,000 participating retail pharmacies will honor it nationwide.  These cards come at no cost to county taxpayers.”  The statement went on to say that prescription discount cards are available through an arrangement with NACo and Caremark Rx, a discount drug company that negotiates with pharmacies in order to offer a discount off standard retail prices.  Caremark obtains its revenue by obtaining a small fee that is paid by the pharmacy on every transaction.

Information on prescription drug savings can be obtained by the individual pharmacy to ensure that the particular drug is covered under the program.  Prescription discount card applications can be picked up at the relevant county agency during regular business hours.
