caffeine side effects Caffeine side effects, such as improved performance and heightened alertness are common traits of the drug, though it is generally considered to be a safe stimulant, according to the FDA.

However, according to studies published in Physician and Sports Medicine, the use of caffeine, especially to boost energy levels, is all too often greatly exaggerated.

Dietary caffeine is found in chocolates, coffees, teas, colas, cocoa and many energy drinks.  Astonishingly, research conducted by Michigan State University found that most common energy drinks contain 15 times the amount of caffeine as a can of Coca-Cola, often anywhere between 80 to 500 mgs of caffeine. The repeated consumption of energy drinks can lead to addiction, one of the most common negative side effects of the drug.

The Fatal Side Effects of Caffeine

Toxicity is one fatal side effect that can occur with excessive intake, and the risk increases in thin or underweight people. Serious side effects of caffeine, such as panic attacks, depression, elevated blood pressure, sleep disorders, and nervous system disorders increase in heart disease sufferers and smokers.

Caffeine is not entirely a negative stimulant, and can be beneficial in treating certain ailments. Positive side effects of the drug are its effectiveness in treating headaches and its role in aiding medication absorption. It is often a common additive in many pain relieving medications. Pain relievers can contain anywhere between 16 and 200 mgs of medication.

The danger of overdose is a very real and potential side effect. Those who consume caffeine-laden foods and drinks and also take medications run the risk of developing caffeine side effects such as addiction, or more seriously, toxicity.
