Caffeine Side Effects Caffeine often gets a bad rap. The news often talks about caffeine side effects, implying that caffeine can be terrible for your health. While there are negative side effects, there are also some positive sides to consider.

It is always good to be aware of the ingredients in drugs prescribed, using information from a doctor or pharmacist as well as a reference for prescription drug facts.

Positive Side Effects of Caffeine

•    Alertness. Caffeine can help to keep a person’s mind alert and may help to increase brain power.

•    Parkinson’s disease. Clinical studies have proven that caffeine may assist in the prevention of Parkinson’s disease.

•    Heart disease. Clinical studies have also shown that caffeine may be able to prevent heart disease. Antioxidants, like caffeine, have also been shown to prevent some cancers.

•    Diabetes. Caffeine stimulates the production of cortisol and adrenaline – two chemicals that cause the liver to burn off more sugar.

•    Stamina. Caffeine deters the production of adenosine, and therefore, muscle fatigue.

Negative Side Effects of Caffeine

•    Panic attacks.

•    Addiction. Caffeine is addictive. A reduction in regular caffeine intake can make a person tired and irritable.

•    Dehydration. Caffeine, a diuretic, can cause a body to become dehydrated.

•    PMS. Caffeine exacerbates PMS including headaches, and cramps.

•    Emotional fatigue. Overdoing physical activity leads to lack of body rest which, in turn, leads to emotional fatigue.

Also be aware that caffeine may appear in various drugs that may not be related directly to pain killers.  Checking the prescription drug list can help to identify items that may cause caffeine side effects.
