The FDA has now added Pradaxa to its prescriptions drug list of blood thinners. Pradaxa, also known by is generic dabigatran, has been developed for those at risk of heart attack or stroke, blood clots and for people with atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat.
Warfarin Could Soon be Removed from Prescriptions List of Atrial Fibrillation Treatments
Pradaxa, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, is the hopeful alternative of a replacement for the widely used anticoagulant warfarin, which was approved in 1954 but is no longer an ideal option for patients, at it is now known to interact with many different pharmaceutical drugs and foods.
Warfarin side effects include heavy bleeding, swelling, aches, bruising, chest pain, flu-like symptoms and in rare cases, skin tissue death. In clinical studies comparing warfarin and Pradaxa, patients using Pradaxa did not require long term monitoring with blood tests as in the case of warfarin. Clinical studies also revealed that Pradaxa patients suffered fewer strokes than warfarin users.
How Does Pradaxa Actually Work?
Pradaxa works by inhibiting thrombin in the blood, the agent responsible for clotting. Pradaxa is not without side effects similar to other anti-clotting drugs. Among the most common include heavier and increased bleeding, stomach pain, nausea and heartburn. Patients will be issued prescription drug information about the increased risk of bleeding associated with Pradaxa.
