What you should know about arthritis is that the term pertains to various afflictions of the skeletal joints in the human body. Copious in number, there are well over 100 joint pain conditions, or arthritides, that exist. These may result from various biological (i.e. the aging process) and environmental (i.e. suffered trauma or infection) causes. Joint inflammation is usually caused by infections or bone fractures and subsides once the affliction is healed. While joint pain is typically a temporary ailment, in situations where cartilage is damaged, the pain will linger and joints are liable to depreciate over time, leading to arthritis.

The most common arthritic affliction is osteoarthritis (or degenerative joint disease). Most commonly affecting the feet, hands, and spine, this arthritis disease is marked by a breakdown of cartilage within the joints. Cartilage serves as a padding or cushion for joints, lubricating and strengthening them. Without this important protein substance, the bone is more exposed to potential damage, and prone to arthritis diseases.

There's much history to be learned about arthritis: To say that arthritis is an age old condition would be an accurate statement, as there is proof that this ailment pre-dates the existence of mankind with traces of ankle arthritis having been discovered in the ancient dinosaurs. Not having the benefit of modern prescription drugs, it is also thought to have been the most common ailment among ancient races of people – with traceable symptoms dating back as early as 4500 BC.

Arthritis Symptoms and Treatment

Common among all arthritis-related conditions is the sensation of pain in one’s joints. This pain can result from inflammation or damage to the joints. As an individual feels more limited by the effects of their arthritis, they are likely to slip into a depression, and the resultant symptoms, such as fatigue, may have the effect of making the pain seem worse. Treatments for depression, such as a prescription drug and therapy, have actually proven to remedy arthritis to an extent. Thus, it is important for those suffering from arthritis to try and maintain a positive attitude and a willingness to receive treatment. The tricky thing about arthritis is that only some of the related conditions can be cured, many can be treated through physical therapy, prescription drug treatment, and exercise: Living an unhealthy, inactive lifestyle is a potential prescription for health problems, such as arthritis. Standard over-the-counter drugs used to treat joint pain include Aspirin, Advil, and Tylenol, however many suffering from arthritis require prescription drug treatments.

About Arthritis Prescription Drugs

If you are suffering from joint pain symptoms, ask your doctor about art hritis and recommended treatment options, including which prescription drug options are best suited for your condition. Prescription drugs for arthritis include corticosteroids and immunosuppressants (such as Azasan, which contains azathioprine). One should be aware that such anti-inflammatory prescription drug options come with potentially harmful side-effects, particularly for those with pre-existing liver conditions. It is always important to consult with one’s doctor and fully disclose all pre-existing conditions before attempting any arthritis prescription drug treatment.
